Bond Referendum Vote

This coming January 12, 2010, the residents of the Cornwall Central School District will be asked to vote on a special bond referendum to approve a variety of renovations to the Cornwall Central Middle School.

The total cost of the renovations will be no greater than $735,672.00 which represents the combined total amount of Building Aid and EXCEL Aid the District would receive. By using this combination of Building Aid and EXCEL Aid, the project will have a ZERO tax impact on taxpayers. However, NYS Law requires voter approval on all capital projects regardless of the tax impact.

Two key factors are driving the need to do these renovations now. The first is based on the nature of the renovations themselves, which address immediate health and safety concerns and the immediate need for more instructional space. The second factor is based on the likely possibility that NYS will soon end the EXCEL program, leaving school districts unable to use unspent EXCEL funds. For Cornwall, this would mean losing $287,648.00 in remaining EXCEL funds available.

Several key areas at the Middle School have been identified as needing renovation work. All of these areas are original to the construction of the former high school. When the district reconfigured in 2005 and this building became the new Middle School, many of these areas were already identified as needing renovation to fit the vision of a 5th through 8th grade middle school.
